About Me

I’m Julia.

I’m an Art Theory and Practice and Sociology student at Northwestern University. I’m a writer (sort of), an artist (sometimes), a Spotify user (always), and a relentless Oxford comma user.

I made this website because I don’t know very much about art. I know I like it. I know it’s important. I know it can be moving, thought-provoking, and educational. I know that I care about art, but I sometimes feel like knowing little about the art world makes me less equipped to participate in it. So, in an effort to demystify the art world for myself (and for you), I created a gallery guide.

Galleries give us the unique opportunity to see art for free. Some offer a taste of art history, some introduce us to emerging art innovators, some highlight local artists, and many cross these and other boundaries. The work shown in galleries is always changing, making them an inexhaustible source of interest. Galleries provide us with curated samples of what the art world has to offer, which is why I chose them as a conduit for navigating its vast landscape.

After visiting a selection of Chicago art galleries, speaking with gallery administrators, traversing the city, and learning about the spaces where artists and art lovers convene, I compiled a guide to these bite-sized pieces of the art world.

I hope you find them in-sightful.

What is Gallery In-Sight?

Gallery In-Sight is a compilation of short guides to Chicago-area art galleries.

These guides are meant to give you in-sight into what you’ll find at each, providing relevant context and terminology to make gallery visits more exciting and accessible.

Based on my observations and brief interviews with participating gallery administrators, I assembled descriptions of the gallery, its art and artists, relevant art terminology, its hours, and how to get there using public transportation.
